
Assistant Lecturer Reem Abou Assi, Pharmaceutical Technology
Reem Abou Assi is a fully registered pharmacist and a member of academic staff in college of pharmacy, Al-Kitab University since 2018. Abou Assi’s research main interest lies in the development of a novel drug delivery system using lipid-based nanocarriers and the use of polymeric materials in the said system. She has been part of several international research grants that have been acknowledged in her published work. In teaching and learning, Abou Assi is the initiators of PHARMASHOUT undergraduate magazine as an experiential education tool for pharmacy students, and her idea won the golden medal at the International Putra InnoCreative Poster Competition 2020. She is a leader in creating volunteer opportunities and academic competitions for undergraduate students, including the intranational HIV poster competition (verified on E-poster) 2018, undergraduate scientific video competition 2019, and social media competitions.
As a pharmacist that goes beyond the counter and classroom, Abou Assi believes in building bridges between different generations and cultures on special events such as the pharmacist international day where she participates with the college of pharmacy students in serving the local society at the rural and multicultural area of Altun-Kupri and implementing the understating of self-care through teaching elders how to self-measure blood pressure, glucose levels and body mass index. During COVID-19, Abou Assi was part of an academic team from Universiti Sains Malaysia that was producing a natural hand sanitizer to contribute to the Malaysian society safety; the team efforts made the headlines at the Malaysian newspaper “The Star”. Recently, Abou Assi was nominated in the first 2000 of one million women in STEM (1MW) and was interviewed about her research and teaching experiences.
